A water fountain will add relaxation and beauty to any backyard or garden area. This you tube will give you an idea of how to create a water fountain for your yard in one day or a weekend.

Many of the products were purchased at Lowes, but a trip to a garage sale or auction may supply you with a unique and cheap planter.

When creating a water fountain any pot will work. Just match it to its surrounds and get creative with color location and additional fountain decor.

One other advantage of a water fountain besides it beauty and relaxation is it will mask noise, which is a plus if you live in an urban area.

Tips for a water fountain

  • Add lights around the fountain for more enjoyment at night.
  • Depending on the fountain size you may be able to add fish and water plants.
  • Make sure the fountain is not too close to a foundation or that you have made provisions for extra water just in case your fountain has a leak.
  • Winterize your fountain if you live in a cool climate.

You can also select your own flat rock from a creek bed. It will save you money and add a story to your fountain project. Children would enjoy this part of the project.

I also mix a few round rocks, ground cover and perennials in near the fountain to add interest to the entire project.

I recently bought tea rose bushes for a rose garden It’s a backyard project I  have wanted to create for many years. Roses have always been a bit of a challenge for me. I think its because I never took the time to plant them properly.

This article will give you a few ideas for rose selection and planting.

Here are a few tips to help the roses thrive.

1.  Once planted, tea roses will need to be watered thoroughly every 7 to 10 days during dry weather. Your garden will be easier to maintain, look lice and help prevent water loss if you use mulch around the rose bushes.

2.  Deadhead the flowers on the rose bushes. When you remove spent flowers it conserves the plant’s energy and will encourage prolonged blooming. To deadhead, remove the faded flowers just above the uppermost three-leaflet leaf. If you are deadheading established tea roses, cut the stem back to the five-leaflet leaf.

Note: all flowers will bloom better if they are deadheaded. Plus the garden looks tidier when the dead blooms are removed.

3.  Encourage healthy growth and vigorous blooms by fertilizing hybrid tea roses three times a year. This will encourage healthy growth, vigorous blooms and will also help with insect control. Healthy nourished plants fens off insect and disease much better.

Fertilize in the early spring, right after pruning, and again during the first bloom period. The last time you will want feed your roses is in July. Do not fertilize in late summer or fall.

Use an all-purpose rose fertilizer such as a 10-10-10. Apply 1/4 cup evenly around each rose bush, stir the fertilizer gently into the soil and water well.

4.  Be sure your hole is big enough; deep enough and that you surround your rose with the best possible soil. This is the step that most people do not follow through on and is actually the most important. Keep in mind as you plant that this is the new home for your plant and you want it to be the best it can be!

5.  Watch carefully for insects and aphid damage and spray or dust accordingly. I use natural insect control but I have found that if you keep your plants watered well, fertilize them when they need it and keep the area cleaned up around your plant that you will have very few to no insects.

6.  Always use clean sharp tools for pruning. Wash them after you use them and a mix of bleach and water will help prevent the tools from carrying disease.

7.  Last of all; get advice from a local nursery or grower for specific care of your rose bushes and other plants for your geographic location. Your nursery is there to help you and they actually enjoy helping. It builds up good communication and trust between them and their customers, which in turn will lead to more business

Rose bushes placed in the backyard add charm and beauty to any home but a rose garden makes a statement and with proper set up is easy to maintain. Your Rose garden may become a place for relaxation, reading or entertaining.

And early spring is the time to start planning a rose garden.

First I would do a little research on different kinds of roses and what varieties would grow best in your climate. Hybrid tea roses are one of gardener’s favorite varieties at this time. Make a selection based on your growing zone, rose variety, color and other gardens or accessories already in the backyard.

Next find a good location that will receive a minimum of six hours of direct sunlight a day. You will also want an area where there is good air movement to prevent wet foliage. Wet foliage can lead to disease and insect problems.

Dormant roses should be planted in the early spring sometime between April 1 and May 15.

I just picked up seven roses for my garden area. These will be mixed in with perennials for color throughout the entire spring summer and fall. Unfortunately there is some growth on the bushes and I need to wait 2 weeks before planting so I have a pre-planting plan in place to keep the bushes, stress free and healthy.

When its time to plant your bushes you will want to dig the hole about 2 feet deep and about 20 inches across depending on how large your tea rose is. Digging the proper hole for your rose is one of the most important steps in a rose garden. Its set the entire stage for its health, adjustment to its new home and how it will receive the nutrients.

When setting up your garden area remember that Hybrid tea roses prefer well-drained, fertile loamy soil. Soil at the bottom of the hole has to be able to sustain excellent growth to ensure that the soil is fertile all the way to the bottom of the planting hole. In most area this means you will be adding compost and peat to the soil available in your yard.

When you are ready to plant the rose bush set the plant upright with the bud union at the right depth. (Your planting instructions that came with the bush should supply this information.) If you live in cooler climates, you should plant the bud union about six inches deep in the soil to protect it from the harsher winters. In warm climates, the bud union can be planted at about the soil level. My advice is to go to a local expert or nursery at get their opinion.

You will want to spread the rose roots out over a pyramid or cone of soil at the bottom of the hole if the plant is bare root. And make sure this cone of soil has additives added for the roses nutritional needs. That would be compost and peat.

If the plant is in a container you can plant the rose with the soil ball intact. Remember to gently loosen root a little. If you don’t the roots may grow in a root bound fashion and slow the plants growth or possible kill the plant.

The soil being back-filled or replaced back around the bush is a critical part to getting your rose off to a good start. A rule of thumb is “for every three shovels of the original soil, add once shovel of compost and one shovel of peat moss.”

Back fill the rose so that the cones are covered and the bud union is exactly where your nursery tells you it should be for your particular climate. Water the plant well. I use a watering can so that the soil is not pushed aside and so that it settles around the roots. I will water the bush several times in small amounts to make sure the soil has settled.

Tamp the soil in place.

The backyard, with a more private feel, can quickly become a social site and entertainment area for most families. And with the economy being unsettled many families are spending more time at home or even vacationing in their backyards.

With this turn to backyard living many people feel its time to revamp the backyard.

Quite often adding a garden, patio area or decorating a balcony will change the entire feeling of your home. And a quick entertainment area can be created in a few hours or a weekend.

Areas that are cost effective to change and set up are:

Children’s Play Area. This area is influenced by the ages of your children. For smaller children you may want to use the patio area for mini games to set up for rainy days or a small wading pool. A playhouse, camping area or fort can be assembled in a weekend and an area like this will provide hours of entertainment for you children.

Teenagers need an area that they can call their own. It may be for entertaining or for sports. It would be easy to arrange taller plants to create a mini garden room for teenagers They would enjoy a private garden room that would give them an area to play music, read or entertain a few friends. A privacy screen will also create a secluded area in the backyard.

And once the children have grown this area can be revamped into a garden area or even a small putting area for golfing.

Patio design

The patio can be one of the fastest ways to change the entire look of your backyard. Add a patio will give a feeling of comfort and relaxation. It will provide a place to entertain and for the children to do quiet activities. Patios can be as easy as laying down indoor-outdoor carpet or building a foundation and a cover for the patio.

By changing furniture, selecting new patio cushions and matching tablecloth, adding a water feature or giving the patio an overall theme, you can create a new feel in your backyard. Summer parties can add to the new look and by changing flowers and garden pots your color theme changes immediately.

Balcony gardens.

The balcony is often the only placed for the urban dweller to relax after a long day. Your space may be limited but a few tips and techniques can turn you balcony into a private haven.

Two common problems with a balcony are making the best use out of limited space and privacy. If you make the space available work for more than one purpose you will feel like you have more space.

You can also add privacy with a privacy screen or by placing a variety of different sizes of plants to create a green living wall.

Easy backyard oasis projects could include new backyard furniture, decorating garden pots, a vertical garden area, water fountain or hillside garden area. Installing evening lighting is also an easy project and will add hours to the time you spend in the backyard.

Backyard ideas are only limited by the budget, and there are frugal ideas that can over come that problem. This should be the year to redo the backyard oasis and enjoy your home to its fullest potential.
